The Cheap Part of Town
Orphans sweep the streets in the cheap part of town,
Scratch and feel for the following meal, smiling upside down.
Gypsies live in caravans in the cheap part of town,
Plastic casket, shopping basket, cars all broken down.
Wait until the sun comes up to drive them all away.
With the smell of baking bread and the kids come out to play, at the start of another day in the cheap part of town.
I see the old men sit playing dominoes in the cheap part of town,
Warm and merry discount sherry, never seen a frown.
Ladies work the pavements in the cheap part of town,
Seeking custom back of dustbin lids go up and down.
The rumble of the train tracks, the smell of gasoline.
The night bus drivers hit the bar for a cup of tea, they gets their drinks for free in the cheap part of town.
Housewives sit in silence on the streets,
Outside down-at-heel bars where blood and liquor meet.
Fair is foul and foul is fair, cigarette smoke fills the air.
And life goes on in earnest with a thousand similar stories every day.
But change is coming to the cheap part of town,
The bingo hall’s now a cut-out mall, the church is falling down.
The parks are lying empty in the cheap part of town.
Kids stay home with a mobile phone and passively frown.
The world goes round and round, and people come and go.
But what will the next days hold for people feeling low?
They just don’t want to know, in the cheap part of town.
I’ve seen many faces wonder
(in the cheap part of town)
I’ve seen men break down and cry.
(in the cheap part of town)
I’ve seen eyes all full of hunger.
(in the cheap part of town)
Never understanding why in the cheap part of town.

Louis Rive Glasgow, UK
Louis plays folk music; not the kind about orcs, glens, wizards etc, more about people and places. Like Tom Waits and Judy Collins if either of them wrote about Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. Closer tae home he wants to follow on from top lyricists like Michael Marra, Liz Lochead, and Hamish Imlach. ... more
