I got on the train to Helensburgh and it was packed. All pished-patter, mentalists as well. As we sped through the West-Lothian soaked glory, the situation got stranger and stranger. I wrote a wee, daft poem about this time, thinking to my self "This is probably the first poem to feature places like Carntyne or Coatbridge Sunnyside". Who knows? This is the story of the 19:27 Saturday service to Helensburgh Central.

lyrics

Ain’t so loquacious, a bottle of ginger makeshift conversation on the forecourt of the Partick Interchange
He’s got no way with words, hardly G11’s answer tae Rabbie Burns
Salt ’n’ vinegar, not getting in again ‘Ah’ve telt ye once, don’t wanna tell ye twice, it’s all for your own good’
A carry-out liability, offending the sensibilities of all the ones from the uptown neighbourhoods

19:27 Saturday service to Helensburgh Central
Mental couple arguing over the change for the price of a couple of cans
No rest for the wicked on the Saturday service to Helensburgh Central
A mandatory face mask and the station tannoy barks the information ‘wash your hands, wash your hands’

Juicy fruit getting through it, while staring at the guard to find out once and for all if we’re stopping at Carntyne
He’s getting to old to be rota-d on for Saturday evening sure he’s seen it all before
Just past Drumgelloch he bellows from the back of his throat something about fares, Carstairs, past the point of caring
No skin off his nose if the barriers at Charing Cross automatically close

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily Coatbridge Sunnyside
Sixteen pounds and ten pence for this roller-coaster ride
And some lass go on a Airdrie and the fella across from me sighed, here’s the script

Flick of the wrist, amphetamine-induced twitch
Asking around for the service to take her to the Anderston Street bridge
We all stay quiet to tired to tell her the name of the train that’s she’s blatantly missed

Half asleep creeping like the devil though the land of half a heavy, you know what I mean, Queen’s Street, low level
It seems fixed schemes, broken dreams, under eighteens don’t need a vaccine.

19:27 Saturday service to Helensburgh Central
A pencil pusher’s nightmare, a jobsworth’s admission of defeat
Oh so clear on the Saturday service to Helensburgh Central
Essential understanding in the arbitrary process of getting from A to B.

Nineteen twenty seven, here’s your destination, take my hand, take my hand.
Nineteen twenty seven, here’s your destination, understand, end of the line
Helensburgh Central, end of the line, end of the line
Helensburgh Central

Louis plays folk music; not the kind about orcs, glens, wizards etc, more about people and places. Like Tom Waits and Judy Collins if either of them wrote about Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. Closer tae home he wants to follow on from top lyricists like Michael Marra, Liz Lochead, and Hamish Imlach. ... more
